We want to scream, but can only scribble: Fanni Futterknecht's performance Power to the Unspoken_Echoes of Resistance had already taken different forms due to the pandemic. We planned to show the project as a live performance as part of our Sweet Sixteen anniversary series, the plan eventually gave way to a version as an environment activated by extracted live moments. Due to the renewed lockdown in Eastern Austria, Fanni Futterknecht is now producing a video work at Kunstraum Niederoesterreich - in terms of content, the project is still driven by the intersections between writing, drawing and speaking and the negotiations between collective and individual.
As soon as it is possible to plan events again, we will look for a date for a screening of the video work at Kunstraum Niederoesterreich. Postponed, but not canceled!
Power to the Unspoken is a performative project that investigates the relationships between writing, speaking, and drawing. Engaging with social concepts such as “I” and “We” and their interaction, the project takes a look at rhetoric in public space by analysing the act of manifestation in its potential for visual transcription through the act of scribbling. In the performance Echoes of Resistance, based on the idea of vocal expression, text is rendered on impulse into illegible drawings. Here, scribbling entails a gesture of overwriting to counter the abundance of words in a fragile society. What imaginaries appear when bodies resist and negotiate in the absence of words? When scribbles replace the verbal, a space of the unspoken is accessed – a space that only exists through sound, movements, and traces.
