Inflammations – in the form of swellings, and heated or reddened body parts – are primarily a protective response of the body. They serve to clear out damaged cells, initiate repair, and to eliminate the cause of injury. In other words, one may say, inflammations are an organism’s attempt to secure its integrity.
The film program Inflammation, jointly conceived by KUNSTVEREIN GARTENHAUS and Kunstraum Niederoesterreich in partnership with the Klima Biennale Wien, considers this biological phenomenon as a metaphor for the burning planetary condition. It foregrounds various forms of ecological transformations like wildfires, desertification and global warming as essentially healing processes of the planetary body.
